Diva's challenge #216: Brella

Today, it's the 4th of May. Laura tells us it's Star Wars day and she used the UMT Brella to draw Darth Vader. Luckily, she only asks us to use Brella, not to draw something from Star Wars ;-) That's not my cup of tea (sorry Laura ;-) ) and besides that, in Holland May 4 is Remembrance of the Dead.

It commemorates all civilians and members of the armed forces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions since the outbreak of World War II. To remember them, tonight at 8.00 pm we kept 2 minutes of silence. Tomorrow, on May 5, we celebrate freedom.

Because of this, I chose to use the logo of the National Committee for 4 and 5 May as a string. I kept it white and put Brella in the background. And: I thank all these brave men and women for the liberty we live in today.

  1. Wat mooi Ilse, dat je in je tile onze dodenherdenking en bedrijdingsdag toont. We hebben er allebei iets over geschreven en dat is goed denk ik, om ook verre werelden te laten weten dat wij e.e.a. niet vergeten.

  2. I did not know about your country's special day. I am always happy to learn more things through my Internet friends. I think it is wonderful that you used this opportunity to thank the people who have given so much to insure our freedom. It's a lovely tile!

  7. I celebrated with my veteran dad who is 93 on Sunday in Toronto Ontario the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands by the Canadian forces. They had a big celebration at the City Hall. Many Dutch people came to shake his hand and thank him for what the Canadians did. I was very moved and very happy for my dad. He had wanted to go to the ceremony overseas but because of his health was not able to. We will remember them!

    1. That's so nice to hear! I hope you read this message, because I'll put the link in it in which you can see the ceremoney here in Holland! Your prime minister was present as well, you'll see his speech after about 1 hour. After that, there is the 'defile'. Thank your dad from us!

  9. Ilse, this is a beautiful monotangle and a lovely tribute to your holiday. As others have said, one of the nice things about the internet is the ability it affords us to be able to learn about people and places that otherwise we would have no clue. Beautiful work Ilse!

  12. One of the extras of the internet it hearing about different events in different countries/cultures. Your tile is a fitting tribute to the people who sacrificed themselves for freedom.

  13. C'est intéressant de voir comme d'un pays à un autre nous ne célébrons pas les mêmes événements. Ce fond avec 'Brella' est très élégant et contraste bien avec les aires blanches du logo.
It is interesting to note that one country to another we do not celebrate the same events. This background with 'Brella' is very elegant and contrasts with the logo white areas.

  16. I love when people combine Zentangle with the history and culture of their country. This is very power. It sounds like a beautiful and worthy holiday, I was inspired by your art to do something in rememberence of U.S soldiers this coming Memorial Day (last week in May).
